What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, isn't easily defined. Put simply, however, it means trying to place your web site in a high ranking position in search engine results pages, when a given keyword or keyword phrase is used to search the web. If pages from your site place in the top 10 to 30 positions, or in the top 3 pages, for the keywords you choose, chances are you will enjoy increased click-through traffic - and more visitors to your site.
How Does SEO work?
Search engines use algorithms to determine the ranking of a page relative to a given keyword phrase. Every search engine is slightly different, and the exact algorithms are not published. Still, it is commonly accepted that the density of keywords on a page, page title, meta tags, content, and link popularity of the site are crucial factors in determining page relevancy for search results.
Where Do I Begin?
Search engine optimization isn't difficult, but requires planning, organization and patience. Start with well-coded web pages that contain high quality, informative content, with a higher proportion of text than html. Although it is possible to optimize sites with flash or javascript, simple is better. Keep your site content looking clean, professional and easy to navigate, with directory headings focusing on the top keywords that you have in mind, and a well organised sitemap.
Search engine optimization isn't an exact science, but legitimate SEO practices help immeasureably toward the goal of long-term success in search engine rankings.
